What Is an Anti-Lock Brake System?

Anti-Lock Brake System

An anti-lock brake (ABS) system is braking technology designed to help improve your stopping ability while maintaining control of your vehicle in emergency braking situations.

ABS systems are now found in most modern vehicles. To go into more detail and answer the question, “What is an anti-lock brake system?”, our team at Group 1 Mazda Denton has written up the following piece for drivers in Denton, Carrollton, and Flower Mound, TX.

Understanding Your Car’s Braking System

Anti-Lock Brake SystemSince the ABS system works hand in hand with your vehicle’s braking system, we first have to look at how the braking system works.

When you press the brake pedal, that creates pressure in the brake lines, which runs down to the brake pads. The pads then squeeze the rotor, which in turn causes friction to stop the wheels from spinning. This is generally how the brakes bring your car to a complete stop.

During emergency braking, ABS automatically engages the moment the rotors create enough friction to stop the wheels from spinning completely. This moment is also known as “locking.”

What Are the Benefits of an Anti-Lock Brake System?

There’s a reason why most manufacturers include an anti-lock brake system in their recent model releases. Truth this, there are plenty of safety benefits when driving a car with this system.

Here are just a few:

Increased stopping power when traveling on ice. The technology found in the ABS system significantly lessens the chances of your vehicle skidding, especially in slippery, wet conditions.

Decreased insurance claims/costs. Vehicles with the ABS technology are shown to have a lower risk of accidents. This fact alone maintains your insurance payments and claims.

Enhanced resale value. Thanks to its safety performance, the ABS system adds more value to your vehicle. As a result, you can expect a higher resale value.

Safer cornering. Anti-lock brake systems have also been shown to help modern cars improve their cornering capabilities. If you enter a corner at a faster speed than recommended, the skid prevention and steering capabilities help keep your vehicle on its intended path along a tighter curve.

Your ABS Malfunction Indicator

Anti-Lock Brake SystemAlthough it’s not common, you may see a light on your dashboard that spells out “ABS.” This is the anti-lock brake system indicator light and only illuminates when there’s a malfunction.

However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean the regular braking system is affected and in most cases will still be fully functional. That being said, we still highly recommend scheduling an appointment with our service center if you see this light. We offer certified professionals who are well-equipped to handle any service your vehicle’s ABS system may need.
