Why Are My Brakes Squeaking?

The most common reason why your brakes are making a noise is worn-out brake pads. Brake pads are designed with a metal indicator that creates a loud, high-pitched noise when they are thinning. The thinner your brake pads are, the more your braking will be affected.

In this case, it’s most likely that you need to fully replace your brake pads. This is not an uncommon practice and should occur every 30,000 to 35,000 miles. If the noise turns into grinding, this could mean you’re going to need new rotors along with your brake pads.

Built-Up Debris

Built-up dust, dirt, and mud behind your pads and rotors could be another reason why your brakes are squeaking. This is the most common reason for drivers who find themselves traveling in various driving conditions.

Thankfully, this rust can easily fall off during your normal drive. To avoid this occurrence, you can make it a habit to park your vehicle inside a garage or a hooded area. This will combat any moisture that may cause rusting in your vehicle.

Other Symptoms of Brake Damage

Though squeaking brakes may be the most obvious sign that you’re in need of brake service, it’s far from the only symptom.

Here are some other signs of brake damage:

• Poor brake performance: Your braking has been less effective or it takes more pressure to bring your vehicle to a complete stop.
• Vibrations: Your steering wheel or dashboard vibrates as you drive.
• Fluid leaks: You find a puddle of fluid underneath your vehicle.
• Warning lights: Your warning brake lights are illuminated.
