What Color is the Smoke?

First things first, you’ll need to check the color of the smoke. That could play a key role in discovering why your car is smoking.

White Smoke

If you see white smoke, there’s generally an issue with the engine. If it’s not overheating, however, you could be left to wonder what’s going on.

Does the smoke smell sweet? If so, there could be an issue with your coolant or radiator. There may also be an issue with your fuel system.

Blue Smoke

An oil leak is a common cause of blue smoke. If it drips on the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter, it will burn from the heat. It can also get into the fuel system and burn. If the smoke smells like tar or asphalt, there’s a good chance it’s an oil leak.

Where is the Smoke Coming From?

Exhaust

First, you’ll want to rule out condensation. If it’s a chilly morning, the hot exhaust gas will meet the cold air outside and result in condensation and steam. It should only come out in small amounts, and it will typically clear up after 30 seconds to a minute.

Where is the Smoke Coming From? If there’s heavy smoke coming from the exhaust, it could signify issues with the engine. There could be a crack in the cylinder head or the engine block itself. If you smell something sweet along with the smoke, it’s likely that coolant has made its way into the combustion chamber.

Engine

If you’re seeing smoke coming from the engine and you’ve ruled out an oil leak, another culprit could be the Engine Control Module (ECM).

A faulty ECM can send wrong signals to the fuel injectors, causing incorrect fuel delivery, and resulting in the engine blowing smoke. The system will need to be reset to fix the problem. Unplugging the battery for a few minutes could be an easy fix. Otherwise, it will need to be reprogrammed by a technician.

Electrical System

The electrical system is one of the most uncommon places to see your car smoking. It can still happen, though. When it does, a hotwire is usually the cause. You’ll know right away, as a hotwire has a very sharp and distinctive smell.

The alternator may also smoke when it completely dies. This will typically be accompanied by your vehicle’s charging system warning light.
